Favrille cGMP Expansion
Mechanical Construction: HVAC, Process Piping & Plumbing Services
VALUE DELIVERED
Increased biopharmaceutical research and manufacturing capabilities; ability to satisfy FDA good manufacturing standards; high-performance mechanical and plumbing systems; improved employee and visitor comfort; greater energy efficiency.
CONSTRUCTION OBJECTIVES
Expand key manufacturing and research facilities to support the commercialization of a promising new cancer treatment.
MECHANICAL & HVAC SOLUTIONS
Favrille selected UMEC (CA) to provide the mechanical, plumbing and process piping systems needed for a 16,500-square-foot expansion of the client’s mission-critical manufacturing facility. A new R&D lab and work in other parts of the existing building completed the scope of work. At the same time, all work had to comply with FDA guidelines for current good manufacturing practices (cGMP).
The major part of the mechanical construction project involved commercial HVAC systems installation, including three 57,000-cfm (cubic feet per minute) air handlers; four 61,000- cfm exhaust fans with variable frequency drives; two 225-ton air-cooled chillers; two 1,191-pounds-per-hour steam boilers; two heating hot water boilers with a total capacity of 4,160 mbh (thousands of British thermal units per hour); and all associated pumps. The company also put in a heat exchanger and two sewage ejectors.
In addition, UMEC (CA) installed mechanical equipment central to Favrille’s manufacturing processes, including a water-for-injection (WFI) and a clean-in-place (CIP) heat exchanger with necessary pumps. Finally, UMEC (CA) crews installed various process vessels provided by the client.
UMEC (CA) utilized its advanced building information modeling (BIM) system to create three dimensional computer models of the project. The team used these models throughout the pre-construction and construction stages to identify and resolve technical issues early, coordinate scheduling, exploit prefabrication opportunities, eliminate rework and optimize safety.
